What you need to know about The Global Wind Organisation (GWO)

What does GWO stand for?

GWO, or Global Wind Organisation, is a non-profit organisation founded by leading OEMs such as GE, Vestas, Enercon, and Vattenfall. The first GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) standard was introduced in 2012, with the Basic Technical Training (BTT) standard following in 2017. Since then, a range of new standards have been developed and regularly updated. Examples include GWO Advanced Rescue Training, GWO Enhanced First Aid and GWO Slinger Signaller.

What is a GWO course?

A GWO course is a course approved by The Global Wind Organisation, using their standards and course materials. This ensures that everyone working in the industry adheres to the same standards and regulations worldwide.

How do you get GWO certification?

To obtain a GWO certificate, candidates must complete a full GWO course through an accredited provider and successfully pass the course. Certification is granted upon approval by GWO-certified instructors.

How long do GWO courses last for before they expire?

GWO courses come with different expiry periods. Most standard courses are valid for two years, after which a refresher course is required. However, some GWO courses offer lifetime certification, meaning once completed, you’re certified for life. In certain countries, candidates are required to renew their certification annually.

What is WINDA?

WINDA is the system that manages and facilitates the tracking and verification of GWO certifications. If you have never attended a GWO course before, you will be required to set up a WINDA profile. You can register easily online.

Once you receive a WINDA ID, it remains the same throughout your career, regardless of your employer.
