About this course

Ideal for individuals embarking on a career in renewable energy, the GWO Basic Technical Training Course serves as an excellent entry point. Whether you possess no prior experience in Mechanical, Electrical, or Hydraulic systems, or if you already have some familiarity with related skills, this course is designed to cater to both scenarios.

Who is the course suitable for?

  • The GWO Basic Technical Training Course is designed for individuals aspiring to enter the onshore and offshore renewable energy sectors. This course serves as an excellent starting point for those with no prior experience in Mechanical, Electrical, and Hydraulic systems. It is equally suitable for individuals who possess some knowledge in these domains or have transferable skills and aspire to enhance their qualifications for employment within the wind turbine industry.

At the end of the mechanical module, you will be able to:

  • Explain the function of the lubrication system and demonstrate how to inspect it
  • Explain the function of the cooling system and demonstrate how to inspect it
  • Explain the function of the yaw system and explain how to inspect it
  • Explain the function of the brake systems and demonstrate how to inspect them
  • Explain the principles of a gearbox
  • Demonstrate the correct use of hydraulic torque and tensioning tools
  • Demonstrate practical skills to use manual tightening and measuring tools
  • Understand the principles of bolted and welded connections and their inspection
  • Explain risks and hazards associated with mechanics
  • Explain the main components, mechanical systems and the basic operation of wind turbines

At the end of the hydraulic module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to measure the hydraulic pressure accurately
  • Identify the components which transfer the oil
  • Identify and find different components on a hydraulic diagram
  • Describe the handling of oil procedures
  • Explain the function of different types of sensors
  • Explain the function of accumulators and demonstrate how to check and pre-charge them
  • Explain the function of different types of valves
  • Explain the function of different types of actuators
  • Explain the function of different types of pumps and demonstrate how to check start/stop pressure of a pump
  • Explain risks and hazards associated with hydraulic work
  • Explain the basics of hydraulics

At the end of the electricity module, you will be able to:

  • Explain the basics of electricity
  • Demonstrate how to make correct and safe measurements
  • Explain and interpret a simple electrical diagram and demonstrate how to assembly it on a circuit
  • Explain the function of different types of sensors
  • Explain the function and symbol of electrical components
  • Explain risks and hazards associated with electrical work

Prerequisites

  • A valid WINDA ID is required.
  • Safety footwear is required for all practical sessions.
  • A general standard of fitness is required.
  • Photographic ID Card, such as a drivers licence or passport.

What will I leave with?
