First Aid at Work | All you need to know

What should be in your workplace first aid kit?

There’s no black and white answer as it depends what sort of industry you are in and the risks associated in the types of work that you do.

In a basic first aid kit you should have:

  • Bandages
  • Plasters
  • Antiseptic
  • Eyewash Solution
  • Sterile Dressings
  • Medical Tape
  • Tweezers
  • Gloves

Most workplaces will also have a separate specialised burns kits and often a defibrillator.

Do you have to maintain and replace items in a first aid kit?

Make sure that you are regularly inspecting your kit. Many items, especially sterile ones, come with expiry dates—be sure to replace any expired items and dispose of them properly. If a sterile item lacks an expiry date, consult the manufacturer for guidance on its lifespan. For non-sterile items without a date, ensure they are still in good condition and suitable for use. This ensures that if you ever have to use it that everything is safe to use.

How many first aiders do I need in my workplace?

Again it depends really on the type of work you are in and the amount of people that you work with. Ideally any workplace should have at least two appointed first aiders.

How to become a first aider?

Becoming a first aider typically involves being selected by your workplace to undergo first aid training. Courses usually last between 1 to 3 days, depending on the content and level of training, and are often arranged and paid for by your employer. Upon successful completion, you’ll be qualified as the designated first aider for your workplace.
