GWO Basic Technical Training (BTT) + Bolt Tightening

About this course

The GWO Basic Technical Training (BTT) and Bolt Tightening Course serves as an excellent course which gives delegates knowledge in the following areas:

  • Mechanical
  • Electrical
  • Hydraulics

GWO Bolt Tightening module can be completed as a standalone course or an add on to GWO Basic Technical Training (BTT).

GWO Bolt Tightening is a new standard and offers more comprehensive training than the previous BTT Mechanical Module. It emphasises safety and quality through scenario-based exercises, requiring participants to plan, execute, document, and review various bolt-tightening tasks.

BTT is an excellent option for individuals who may have no prior mechanical or electrical experience and would like to gain an understanding. However it is equally suitable for those who already have an understanding of these systems.

This course is becoming increasingly popular among delegates in the wind industry.

Who is the course suitable for?

  • The GWO Basic Technical Training Course and Bolt Tightening Course is designed for individuals aspiring to enter the onshore and offshore renewable energy sectors. This course serves as an excellent starting point for those with no prior experience in Mechanical, Electrical, and Hydraulic systems. It is equally suitable for individuals who possess some knowledge in these domains or have transferable skills and aspire to enhance their qualifications for employment within the wind turbine industry. This course is also suitable for candidates looking to enter the industry.

At the end of the mechanical module, you will be able to:

  • Explain the function of the lubrication system and demonstrate how to inspect it
  • Explain the function of the cooling system and demonstrate how to inspect it
  • Explain the function of the yaw system and explain how to inspect it
  • Explain the function of the brake systems and demonstrate how to inspect them
  • Explain the principles of a gearbox
  • Demonstrate the correct use of hydraulic torque and tensioning tools
  • Demonstrate practical skills to use manual tightening and measuring tools
  • Understand the principles of bolted and welded connections and their inspection
  • Explain risks and hazards associated with mechanics
  • Explain the main components, mechanical systems and the basic operation of wind turbines

At the end of the hydraulic module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to measure the hydraulic pressure accurately
  • Identify the components which transfer the oil
  • Identify and find different components on a hydraulic diagram
  • Describe the handling of oil procedures
  • Explain the function of different types of sensors
  • Explain the function of accumulators and demonstrate how to check and pre-charge them
  • Explain the function of different types of valves
  • Explain the function of different types of actuators
  • Explain the function of different types of pumps and demonstrate how to check start/stop pressure of a pump
  • Explain risks and hazards associated with hydraulic work
  • Explain the basics of hydraulics

At the end of the electricity module, you will be able to:

  • Explain the basics of electricity
  • Demonstrate how to make correct and safe measurements
  • Explain and interpret a simple electrical diagram and demonstrate how to assembly it on a circuit
  • Explain the function of different types of sensors
  • Explain the function and symbol of electrical components
  • Explain risks and hazards associated with electrical work

What will I learn in the bolt tightening module?

  • Learn how to safely use power tools and accessories in the wind industry.
  • Learn how to tighten bolts safely.
  • Learn how to plan, document and review bolt tightening tasks.

Prerequisites

  • A valid WINDA ID is required.
  • Safety footwear is required for all practical sessions.
  • A general standard of fitness is required.
  • Photographic ID Card, such as a drivers licence or passport.

What will I leave with?

  • Upon completion of the course, delegates will be awarded with GWO approved certification for Basic Technical Training.
  • Certification does not expire.

What to expect on the day

  • Registration and Welcome: The day typically begins with registration, where participants confirm their attendance and receive any necessary training materials or equipment.
  • Safety Briefing: A safety briefing is conducted to highlight the importance of adhering to safety protocols throughout the training session and in our centre.
  • Catering: Lunch will be provided to all delegates on full days of the course, not the 0.5 day.

Important Information

Participants or individuals booking the course are responsible for ensuring that they meet all the necessary prerequisites and provide the required evidence, such as valid certificates for revalidation courses, on the first day of the course.

Failure to fulfill any of these prerequisites may lead to the participant being requested to leave the course. Please note that no refunds will be issued in such cases.
